The search of the rectory, church, and grounds produced no hard evidence of Catherine Javouhey but did bring to light the relationship of Elias Hatch and the ambitious Father James Blaze. Balducci secured a number of medical invoices and letters that verified how closely the good priest was taking care of the cemetery keeper who had been struggling with voices and visions of the dead for a number of years.

In his search, Balducci scanned the office bookshelves, filled mostly with volumes on the Vatican, some in Italian. Guess most priests knew Italian or Latin; Blaze had spent two years studying at the Vatican. On his desk sat a volume of Teilhard de Chardin’s The Divine Milieu with a partially written homily stuck inside the front cover. Science and Religion, Two Hands at Prayer. If you’re looking for truth, look to the creation of this world, not to the magisterium of the church. The world is God. Balducci tossed it aside. “He’s bolder than most. I’ll give him that.” He picked up a hardcover tome, Book of Enoch, tabbed with stickies.

“Mike?” Deputy Chief Paul Owens walked into the priest’s office.

Balducci had his eyes on Blaze’s drawings of the planet earth and what looked like weather patterns between the north and south poles.

“Dan called.”

“Yeah?”

“They just rushed the lab tech, Jake Kras, to Emerson Hospital.”

“What?”

“That skull you dug up in Old Willow? It’s radiating some kind of heat. Knocked the kid out cold.”
